Let’s take a step back in time…

Morristown’s history dates back to the early 1700s, when the area was first settled by English colonists on land originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. Its central location and access to important transportation routes helped the town grow quickly during the colonial period, eventually becoming one of the most significant communities in early New Jersey.

Morristown played a major role during the American Revolutionary War and became known as the “Military Capital of the American Revolution.” General George Washington and the Continental Army spent two winters encamped in the area, including at Jockey Hollow, where thousands of soldiers were stationed during some of the harshest years of the war. Many historic sites from this period, including Washington’s Headquarters at the Ford Mansion, still remain today.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, Morristown evolved from a historic colonial town into a thriving commercial and residential center. The arrival of the railroad helped transform the area into a popular destination for wealthy families, leading to the construction of grand estates and the growth of downtown businesses. Today, Morristown blends its rich historical character with a vibrant downtown, cultural attractions, and modern suburban living.
