Letβs take a step back in timeβ¦
Millburn began as a colonial farming community, later powered by 18th and 19th century mills and factories, before evolving into a Victorian-era suburb. Remnants of its past remain in landmarks like the Hessian House, the Paper Mill Playhouse, and historic neighborhoods such as Short Hills Park and Wyoming.
The township played a role in the Revolutionary War, with Washingtonβs troops nearby and the Battle of Springfield fought on its doorstep. Afterward, paper and hat mills fueled local growth, and the arrival of the Morris & Essex Railroad in 1835 connected Millburn to the regionβs cities and markets.
The name βMillburn,β chosen in 1857, reflects both its Scottish roots (βburnβ meaning stream) and its milling heritage. In the late 1800s, the Wyoming neighborhood and Stewart Hartshornβs visionary Short Hills development transformed the area into one of the nationβs first planned commuter suburbs.
